Baku has enough inside the city for two days, but the strongest reason to add a car is what happens outside the ring roads: mud volcanoes, fire temples, dry hills, mosques, mountain villages, wine country, and Silk Road towns. The trick is knowing which routes are genuine day trips and which deserve an overnight.
These seven routes are ranked for practical driving, not just fame. Start early, avoid night returns on unfamiliar roads, and check access locally when a route involves dirt tracks, mountain weather, or protected areas.
1. Gobustan and the Mud Volcanoes
The easiest high-impact drive from Baku is Gobustan, about 67 kilometres southwest of the city. Visit the rock art reserve and museum, then continue to the mud volcano area if conditions allow. The highway section is simple; the final approach can be rough, muddy, or confusing after rain.
Best for first-time visitors, photographers, and anyone who wants a half-day route that feels nothing like Baku.
2. Absheron Peninsula Fire Route
For a shorter cultural day, drive around the Absheron Peninsula: Ateshgah Fire Temple, Yanar Dag, Mardakan castles, and coastal villages. Traffic can be busy leaving Baku, but distances are manageable and the route pairs well with a late city dinner.
This is a good choice in winter or on days when mountain weather looks poor.
3. Shamakhi and Lahic
Shamakhi Juma Mosque, Diri Baba Mausoleum, and Lahic's coppersmith lanes make a rich full-day route. It is better with an overnight near Lahic or Ismayilli, but strong drivers can do it from Baku if they leave early and keep stops controlled.
4. Quba and Khinaliq
Khinaliq via Quba is one of Azerbaijan's big mountain experiences. It can be done as a long day in good weather, but it feels much better with a Quba night or village homestay. A high-clearance vehicle is useful, and daylight is non-negotiable.
5. Gabala, Nohur Lake, and Mountain Resorts
Gabala is a softer mountain-and-lake route, useful for families or travelers who want scenery without the intensity of Khinaliq. Nohur Lake and Yeddi Gozel Waterfall are common stops. Expect a more developed resort feel than in Lahic or Sheki.
6. Sheki as an Overnight, Not a Day Trip
Sheki appears on day-trip lists, but from Baku it is too far for a satisfying out-and-back. Treat it as a two-day route at minimum. The direct drive takes around 4.5 to 5.5 hours, before you add palace visits, food, or caravanserai time.
7. Wine and Food Stops West of Baku
Azerbaijan's wine regions are a quieter alternative to the famous sights. If you are interested in vineyards, build the route around confirmed opening times and a designated driver. Do not improvise wine tasting and mountain driving on the same afternoon.
How to Choose the Right Day Trip
If it is your first time in Azerbaijan, choose Gobustan. If the weather is poor, choose Absheron. If you want craft and mountain roads, choose Lahic and accept the longer day. If you want high Caucasus scenery, build Khinaliq with an overnight. If you want Sheki, stop calling it a day trip and give it two days.
Driving Habits Around Baku
Leaving and re-entering Baku can be the most stressful part of the day. Start early, avoid peak commute hours, and keep navigation running even on highways. Petrol stations are common on main routes, but not on every mountain detour.
